Assistant Director, Learning Services – Cleveland Campus

Position Summary:

This position is essential in providing learning services to the medical student experience and Heritage College multi-campus success by serving as a leader, campus advisor, and advocate of learning programs, intervention, and academic support strategies. Position provides individualized longitudinal support and student engagement during Years 1-4 of the medical school program with the development of individual learning and preparatory skills that enhance overall academic performance. This position develops and makes revisions to campus learning service programs offered throughout the multi-campus environment, ensuring continuity of approach and site-specific program execution. Additionally, this position is required to assist with Student Affairs and campus programming activities promoting student engagement, health and wellness.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Serve as primary contact and manager of programming for the learning services within the Heritage College. Provide holistic advising with students (Years 1-4) to identify barriers that hinder academic outcomes. Oversees and implements learning services that result in increased student academic performance and student retention, which is critical to the mission of the Heritage College. Direct students to the appropriate resources as warranted to improve academic performance – such as behavioral health services.

Designs and makes revisions to tailored, individual medical curriculum study plans that increase academic success and promote student wellness. Establish measures and prioritize means of direct student follow-up. Conduct one-on-one advising appointments on medical knowledge, course management, study skill effectiveness and learning styles. Generate detailed progress documentation as reference to student performance, coaching and advising. Prepare, empower and counsel students in prep for high stakes examinations, board/licensing exams and curriculum/course final assessments.

Responsible for developing and implementing high stakes remediation and directed study plans for struggling students to cultivate comprehension of medical school curriculum, course concepts and academic learning objectives. Establish further objectives for assessing and coaching measures to aid student retention. Facilitate scheduled exam reviews with medical students to define process improvement areas. Advise Heritage College Student Affairs and Academic Affairs leads on student progress and retention status. Collaborate with Heritage College faculty and course leads to develop and advance areas of aid, resource or support to student academic development.

2. Serve as primary campus contact and manages programming of a site-specific academic center that is tailored to advise and advance medical student academic performances. Identify, recruit, hire and supervise multiple student employees to function as medical student tutors and facilitators of learning community activities. Assess and match medical students to tutor resources based on content knowledge, individualized areas of curriculum support, and/or preparation for high-stakes standardized board exams. Identify content leads and schedule group tutoring opportunities.

Research applicable study aid resources, learning approaches and applications to support learning community activities. Implement approaches to incorporating learning applications and resources into student advising sessions and individualized academic study plans. Collaboratively develop, plan and execute programs and support measures across the Heritage College multi-campus environment. Design learning services promotional materials and present group workshops that increase students’ awareness and understanding of learning approaches, studying, test taking skill and preparation for assessments. Disseminate information and departmental communications regarding course resources, academic aids and approaches to aligning learning objectives to methods that increase overall medical knowledge.

3. Manage, plan, and execute student programming, orientation, and campus outreach activities in conjunction with site staff, Heritage College Student Affairs and Office of Medical Education. Advance innovative activities to enhance the campus culture and educational experience. Work additionally with local vendors, area primary and secondary schools, partnering physicians, medical education specialists, professional organizations and OHIO departments on programming, events and outreach initiatives. Provides budget guidance for resources needed to implement learning services programming for respective academic campus.

Participate in Heritage College Admissions student interview days, identifying and establishing basis for supported learning services. Engage with pipeline programs developing and preparing students for success within the college’s multi-campus environment.

Promote and refer students to partnering OHIO departments and external campus resources for medical or psychological assistance, assessment for disability and/or cognitive assessment. Serve as campus liaison in identifying specific approaches and applicable student resources related to test anxiety, accessibility services, ELL , physical wellness, behavioral health and counseling support. Proctor exams as required of site operations.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
-Master’s degree in education, cognitive psychology or graduate degree in reading or appropriate field.  An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the master’s degree requirement.
-6 years of work related experience, 2 of which must be in implementing the diagnostic/prescriptive approach to learning skills assistance with adults
-2 years working with adults concerning cognitive skill development
-1 year of supervisory or managerial responsibilities
