As a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), you will be providing timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, elder abuse, and assist patients with human trafficking concerns. You will also set up protocols for a forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, and more.

Your primary duties will include:
– Performing and documenting sexual assault and providing forensic consultation and exams.
– Performing a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head-to-Toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, and more while reporting when appropriate.
– Maintaining professional standards while not creating conflict of interests with employment or patient care.
– Maintaining equipment in proper working condition.
– Documenting detailed injuries accurately with support of photographic evidence.

Responsibilities:

  • Participating in an on call schedule, as determined by SANE coordinator and responds to the designated facility within one hour.
  • Completes clinical experiences as determined by the SANE course and coordinator (e.g., Civilian observer with Cleveland Police or Cleveland Sex Crimes, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Domestic Violence/Child Advocacy Center, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Family Justice Center (Cleveland), and Courtroom trial experience).
  • Performs speculum exams and/or pediatric assessments under the supervision of a LIP.
  • Utilizes thorough knowledge of anatomy and body structures and mechanisms and patterns of injury.
  • Utilizes a thorough knowledge on collecting and managing forensic evidence with a Sexual Assault Exam Collection (SAEC) kit and a Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault kit (DFSA).
  • Interacts and collaborates with medical and nursing staff, law enforcement, prosecutor, protective services, advocates and other agencies as needed.
  • Works independently and demonstrates organizational and time management skills.
  • Travels to other Cleveland Clinic Facilities as needed.
  • Attends continuing education as a sexual assault nurse.
  • Participates in 75% of staff meetings and attends and completes annual SANE competency. Utilizes clear and concise written documentation skills and articulates clearly.
  • Utilizes appropriately use of a camera in regards to photo documentation of injuries and/or evidence.
  • Provides court testimony as needed.
  • Participates in community awareness programs and professional organizations.
  • Utilizes current knowledge base regarding legislation and government programs and best practice standards of care.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Complete an  IAFN approved SANE Adolescent/Adult course within 60 days of hire.
  • Complete an  IAFN approved SANE Pediatric course within 1 year of hire for incumbents hired after April 1, 2018, if needed for assigned location.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. 

Certifications:

  • Current state licensure as Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA).
  • If in an ED, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within one year of beginning work in the Emergency Department.

Work Experience:

  • 1 year recent RN work experience.
  • Trauma, Women’s Health or Pediatric experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible.
  • Note: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
