Local Matters is a nonprofit working to improve food security and health across communities through food education, access, and advocacy.

We provide a range of comprehensive programs that give people the resources, knowledge, and skills they need to eat well and feed their families on a budget.

In 2020, our core programs brought life-changing access and education to 17,000 children, adults and families.

Position Summary

Food Educators teach individuals of all ages about the importance of positive food choices and how to grow, prepare, and eat healthful and delicious meals and snacks on a budget.

Food Educators connect participants to the cultural roots and traditions of food, offer real-life, hands-on food experiences incorporating whole foods to create healthful meals at home, and help class participants develop a language to talk positively about healthful whole foods.

These curricula teach children, teens, adults, and families about whole foods, ecology, nutrition, culture, and healthy living as they learn about healthful foods through hands-on food preparation.

Food Educators are members of the Local Matters team who implement, lead, and facilitate Local Matters’ participation in classes and community events.

Classes are taking place in-person and virtually.

Food Educators will be trained on the Local Matters curricula as well as the virtual of delivery of programming that takes place from our headquarters.

Qualifications & Skills

· Strong communication and relationship-building skills and experience working well with individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

· Familiarity with food preparation.

· Interest in learning content related to healthful food, preparation of meals utilizing whole foods, and strategies to incorporate positive food habits in daily food routines.

· Comfortable making adaptations based on the needs of the event/classroom.

· Comfortable with being on camera.

· Bachelor’s degree or minimum 2+ years of experience in a related field, teaching experience a plus.

· Education and/or professional background in early-childhood education, nutrition, or horticulture.

· Strong organizational and time management skills.

· Flexible, friendly, positive and team-oriented.

· Basic computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office and Zoom.

Specific Responsibilities include:

· Teach individuals of all ages the life skills of basic food preparation through hands-on interactive experiences.

· Educate community members about healthful, whole foods through engaging hands-on activities that frame the relationship between the food they eat and the health of their bodies.

· Encourage individuals to eat healthful foods via what they learn through engaging with Local Matters at community engagements/events.

· Invite families and communities to learn about healthful foods and chronic-disease prevention by participating in classroom lessons, parent engagements, community workshops, gardens, and collaborative projects related to food.

· This position may also assist with our food access program, Veggie Van, as needed.

Position is full-time at 40 hours per week, primarily Monday through Friday, although some evenings and weekends may be necessary.

Schedule will vary based on the needs of the program.

Local Matters makes every attempt to ensure employee safety during the pandemic.

Compensation for this position will range from $35,000 to $38,000 plus benefits, commensurate with education and experience.
