At STERIS, we help our Customers create a healthier and safer world by providing innovative healthcare and life science product and service solutions around the globe.Position SummaryThe Patent Attorney will report to the Chief IP Counsel and manage a patent portfolio, review, prepare, file and prosecute U.S. priority and national stage patent applications, and assist with other work, including opinions, agreements, and managing outside counsel. Responsible for controlling and tracking spending to stay within budget guidelines.What You Will Do* Draft and prosecute U.S. priority and national stage patent applications* Oversee and manage outside counsel in the filing and prosecution of patent applications* Work with the STERIS Intellectual Property team to manage a patent portfolio and formulate a global filing strategy* Work with inventors, evaluation of invention disclosures, perform patentability assessments, and assist with design-around efforts.* Align Intellectual Property activities with business priorities.What You Need to be Successful* Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline or hard science required plus a Law degree from an ABA accredited law school and admission to a state bar required* Minimum of 8 years of patent application preparation and prosecution experience on U.S. and foreign patent filings, either at a law firm or in-house legal department.* Understanding of Innovation and product development process in technology/R&D* Admission to practice before the USPTO* Extensive knowledge of USPTO and PCT rules, regulations, practice and forms* The ability to perform research, and to share knowledge with and train others.* Experience conducting product clearances, freedom to operate and patentability searches, and formulating/communicating opinions on same.* Experience with IP related agreements, such as non-disclosure, licensing, litigation support, supplier and development agreements preferred. Some experience with trademarks preferred.* Strong verbal and written communication skills. Able to communicate effectively in the technical, legal and business environments, e.g., engineers, attorneys, marketing and sales, business management.* Must be flexible and able to work independently, handle multiple tasks, work collaboratively, think creatively, take initiative and respond quickly to changing priorities. Must be creative and have a desire for constant improvement; willingness to challenge the status quo and conventional wisdom where appropriate.* Able to work in a collaborative teamwork style work environment and be willing to learn from/assist/support others.* Strong computer skills including an ability to utilize software including, Microsoft Office, the USPTO’s EFS, and STERIS’s IP docket management system.Offering You in ReturnThe opportunity to join a company that will invest in you for the long-term.
